AICUM's annual Student Financial Aid Day at the State House was a
huge success! More than 200 participants representing 35 schools came
out in force on Feb. 28 to ask legislators for their continued support of student financial
aid. The
students were rallied by House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo (Winthrop), and the
co-chairs of the Higher Education Committee, Senator Michael Moore
(Worcester) and Representative Tom Sannicandro (Ashland) and Linda
Dorcena Forry (Dorchester). Lesley University President Joe Moore and
AICUM Board Chair and Deputy Commissioner Clantha McCurdy from the
Department of Higher Education also spoke of the importance of higher education and how personal visits to
the State House make a huge impact, putting a “face” to a line item in
the state budget. The event attracted press attention from WBZ News Radio, Hampshire Gazette, and The Daily Free Press. |

AICUM's annual dinner was another smash success, with more than 400
people packing a Seaport Hotel ballroom to celebrate the vital
contributions of the independent colleges and universities in
Massachusetts.
The evening honored the Patrick-Murray
Administration for their consistent commitment to need-based financial
aid funding for needy Massachusetts college students.
A special tribute was paid to the visual and
performing arts and their importance to the culture and economy of the
Commonwealth. Performances included the Michael Sachs Trio from The New
England Conservatory of Music; Dean College performing arts students in
an exciting scene from 'The Three Musketeers,' and Pitch Slapped,
Berklee College of Music's A Capella vocal group. Student artwork was
also displayed throughout the event.
